Nederlandse Spoorwegen 500/600/700 series shunter locomotive - Gauge 1 - An edited version of the BR Class 08 by Peter Davis

Zip archve

After the second world war 10 War Department Class 08's were purchased by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen in 1946. Because they were not equiped with Westinghouse brakes, they could only be used for shunting services (500 series). The series 600 and 700 were fitted with the required brakes to operate on the main lines. The exterior of all the series is almost identical.

They were in service untill 2005. Serveral are preserved in both the UK and the Netherlands. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/NS_500

Peter Davis has published a well designed British Railways Class 08 shunter locomotive. I've adjusted his files to create the Dutch series 500/600/700. All my files can be fitted on a 30 x 30 cm bed (i.e. Artillery Sidewinder, Creality CR10)

All published drive-units are based on a single driven axle, transferring power to the other axles by the connecting rods. When 3D-printed, these items are relatively fragile. It's my opinion any load on the connecting rods is to be avoided.

That's why I've designed a drive unit based on a JGA25 geared motor (i.e. 6V/1200) driving all 3 axles with gears. The function of the connecting rods is now for decoration only. This drive is powerfull and able to run slow due to the applied gearing.

To make printing easier, I've also split the wheels in two parts: a wheel and a hub. The jig for creating flat spots on the axles is also adjusted.
All gears, wheel, and cranks are mounted on 3 mm axles using M2 grub screws.
All axles run in MR63ZZ bearings. The connecting rods are mounted to the cranks with M2 or M2.5 bolts.

Please praise Peter for his original design, I've only modified them slightly and added a drive-unit.

Peter's instructions are still applicable for building the frame, cabin and engine covers.

Once all items are printed, assembled and painted I'll design holders for batteries, ESC, receiver, etc...

....... to be continued .......
